It almost seem tragic to post something I imagine to be rather cool and interesting under miscellaneous but alas this is not quite a question of neuroscience. Anyway, part of my work in the lab revolves around a strange animal called the naked mole-rat (you might have seen it if you happen to watch Kim Possible... ) Anyway this animal being roughly the size of a mouse has a remarkable property of being extremely longlived ... Ones in captivity have been known to live up till 20 years. This of course goes against the conventional idea that the bigger an organism the longer it lives. A recent paper showed a reason for why the naked mole-rat is long lived. Its proteins are remarkably stable and resistant to oxidation. So people looking for an area of research that will truly impact the lives of everyone... figure out a way to strabilise our protein from oxidative stress?Huh

Check out the paper here
